Library Technician

Position Overview:

Reporting to the MFNCS Principal, the Library Technician provides Library Technician/Casual Teacher Aide assistance to the Muskoday First Nation Community School (MFNCS) student & staff. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Duties and Responsibilities:

Scheduling library events and maintaining library schedule for grades Pre-K to 9 for display

Planning lessons to be delivered by the Library Technician and pre-planning events (E.G. Yearly Scholastic Book Fair, Literacy Week, 100th day, seasonal themes) that promote literacy for all classrooms—Pre-K to 9

Oversee the MFNCS Tipi Teaching resources (orders placed, preparing invoices, photocopying, updates, moving the resource to an online resource for purchase)

Communicates with immediate supervisor and IT to troubleshoot service interruptions and implement new features

Providing reference and open learning services to students and staff of MFNCS

Helping MFNCS staff and students to develop search strategies

Assisting with the use of the internet and library software programs

Providing classroom and one-on-one delivery of the materials available in the MFNCS Library regarding services and collections

Developing, maintaining and purchasing collection materials to support specific academic programs

Maintaining budget for purchase within the program area

Supervision of students (EG: recess, lunch, bus duty)

Offer assistance/presentations to classrooms when requested by the administration, individual teachers, support staff to promote the use of the library

Participate in community events and school events as requested

Participate in Extra-Curricular and Fundraising events

Familiarity with using a SMART Board


Completed a two-year postsecondary diploma in a relevant field of study that may include, but is not limited to Library and Information Technician preferred

Two years’ experience as a Library Technician where duties included Library providing information /reference services to school staff and students, collection development, tracking budget entries, tracking books EG: taken out, to be returned, past due and updating staff regularly

Advanced computer skills and experience with:

Library Concepts, PPC (or equivalent) application software
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
Proven communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated supervision experience with the ability to problem-solve
Ability to work independently and within a team environment
Ability to work with a variety of age levels, a willingness to teach library skills/literacy skills (Read Alouds, Oral Language development etc.) and prepare lessons for a variety of age levels
Demonstrated organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
Ability to work some non-traditional hours (some evenings and weekend commitments re Extra-Curricular/Fundraising/Community Events/Training)
Experience in a school library and cataloguing are assets
